Summer would be a relative tranquil period overall. The minor recession was lifting off though there would be some concerns given some of the causes were things like with home pricing and the like. Additionally, there was also the wonder of where the next bubble would come from. Some speculated it may come from the Tech sector again. After all, while these new websites like Myspace, YouTube, Twitter and so on were proving themselves to have enduring power, the question was if it would remain profitable for investors. Of course, for alot of them, it was still a sort of semi-settled Wild West so there was plenty of room for experimenting on what could be done. After all, ArtistShare has been proving such possiblities with crowdfunding and artists working with their audience. Though speaking of media, the ending of analog television broadcasts by the FCC would be delayed over to at least 2010. This decision was made by the Snowe Administration to ensure that analog would no longer be needed by the time the switch to purely digital signals would be made. [1] Another bit regarding technology would be the release of Windows Zen, the successor to the critically maligned, but still foundational Windows Vista. Having focused on fixing many of the problems and shortcomings of Vista, Zen would prove to be quite popular off the ground.

Over in politics, a bit of surprising news would arrive in the form of retirement. Specifically, Chief Justice Gilbert Stroud Merritt Jr would announce his retirement. As he put it, he was approaching his mid 70s and decided that it would probably be better to go earlier rather than later when it came over to retiring. The Snowe Administration would bid him a fond farewell. Ruth Bader Ginsburg would be chosen to become the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court while the Snowe Administration would pick Merritt Jr's replacement over in with Janet Napolitano as the newest addition over to the Supreme Court. She would be joining the new Chief Justice Ginsburg (since 2003) along with José Alberto Cabranes(since 1999), Sonia Sotomayor (since 2003), David S. Tatel (since 2003), Micheal Sandel (since 2005), Mario Cuomo (since 2005), Ann Claire Williams (since 2007) and Leah Ward Sears (since 2007). Further political developments would be occurring over on state levels. More and more states were legalizing recreational cannabis, with the topic having been brought up over in the new states of DC and Puerto Rico. Though speaking of smoking, Nebraska's ban of smoking within places like bars and restaurants would kick in and some were wondering of similar bans would be seen across the states. [1]

Across the world, the focus was on containing a global pandemic, that of a type of influenza known as "swine flu." While the risk was no higher than the seasonal flu, it still caught more than a few groups off-guard and it still led to a number of deaths across the world. The fortunate news was that the mutations led to it having a much lesser fatality rate. [2] In lighter news, famed musician Micheal Jackson would begin his famous "This Is It" concert residency over in London. Micheal has claimed this would be his final tour show for the forseeable future, his "final curtain call" as he would put it. Many have claimed this was likely due to Jackson focusing more on his physical and mental health over fame. He has announced that he would not be retiring from music completely. His decision for this bit of semi-retirement led to many questions regarding fame, mental health of celeberties and the changing of the music scene. Meanwhile, Iceland would begin its path over into joining the European Union, leaving fewer and fewer nations not yet within the growing supranational continental organization. [2] Additionally, Bolivia would become the first South American country to declare the right of indigenous people to govern themselves. [2]

Autumn of 2009 would bring about a few surprises over for the world. A new wave of studies and reports would be released that would become quite the game changer. That solar and wind power had, as of this year, crossed the rubicon when it came to costs. Thanks to the large investments and research put in by the US government decades prior along with the numerous internal and external incentives, solar and wind power became more and more affordable. As such, it would now become much easier to adopt the technologies and implement them at a much greater scale. Furthermore, with it looked to become more affordable still, it brought renewables now to the forefront as the major new business to go and get into. There were still problems to be solved, such as how to recycle the materials used in wind power blades and older solar panels, but that was just viewed as part of the new opportunity and financial venues to go and get into. While renewables were talked of more and more, the paperwork now showing the feasibility of it all now gave it a massive boost in attention and consideration. Of course, this would also go into a new study regarding the auxillary businesses effected, transportation being the key one. The "fuel cell vs electric" car war was raging on and while electric was coming in closer, the new study would go and change the landscape between them. Fossil fuel companies meanwhile took another hit in stocks. While they were still valuable in it of themselves, the last couple of decades were not kind and saw alot of changes in leadership in structure, with some expanding into general energy provision.

Meanwhile, the G20 would meet over in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Here, world leaders announced that they would work closer together regarding the global economy and play a larger role to shape what is to come. [1] Consisting of the largest finance ministries, the groups have faced some scrutiny regarding representation of the nations and their economies. After all, no one liked being left out. Founded in the late 1990s, the organization of the various prominent economic powers in the world: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, the Sovereign Union, the UK and the United States. Additionally, North Korea attended as a result of their impending reunification over with the south. Saudi Arabia was a founding member, but with the transition to Kingdom of Arabia, there was a space open (even if they did have a representative there). However, someone would come to take their place over with Ethiopia. The final member would be the European Union, being the first supranational organization there. Many believe though that the G20 may be expanded into a G25 or even G30 to account for some better representation. Beyond the return of the Kingdom of Arabia, other invitees and potential candidates included Spain, Norway, Turkey, Poland, Thailand, the Netherlands, Nigeria or Zaire along with the African Union. Though speaking of international organizations, the International Olympic Committee awards Rio de Janeiro the right to host the 2016 Summer Olympics, following up 2012's being held over in Triumfgrad. [1]

Within pop culture, the big news would be the death of Tiger Woods. Just after Thanksgiving, he would be involved over in a car crash that would result in the end of his life. [1] The sudden shock and loss of Tiger Woods would be tragic news over to the world of golf. However, it would also become mired over in controversy with the revelations of several extramarital affairs. In fact, it was speculated that Woods may have been at one in the night of his crash. This would not be the only scandal going on. WikiLeaks would expose the contents of Kaupthing Bank's internal documents prior to the Icelandic Financial Crisis. These documents showed suspicious amounts of money were loaned to bank owners, and debts being written off. [2] It was suspected the cause of the Crisis was due to some deregulations back over in 2001. The ordeal also served as an example regarding the dangers of deregulation when it came to institutions such as banking. The financial crisis saw a massive wave of protests months prior and even the resignation of the old government. Such a phenomenon led to a lot of talks for various pundits and experts here on the subject matter. For some, they saw it as an example on the dangers of financial deregulation. Others were inspired by the people's movement over on it. And all the while, typhoons and intense earthquakes further prompted people to come together and aid in the international community.

    2009 Overview
  • 2009 Overview

The world entered a relatively mild economic recession over in 2009, but it wasn't anything too serious. Overall, the first year of Olympia Snowe's presidency went by rather quietly. President Snowe and her administration were focusing overseeing what was going on, while also having to prepare what was coming. After all, this year would seee the release of a study regarding the pricing of solar power now reaching the capabilities of practical widespread implementation. As such, the Snowe Administration would be having to use this new informaton. After all, while they were conservatives, they were a brand new type of conservative (or at the very least, a modern version of older kinds such as paternalistic conservatism) and thus, they were pragmatic and flexible with changes. In this case, it was on what they could use this new phenomenon for. Of course, one announced program would be to incentivize people to go and consider buying solar power as the business is thriving. On the more political side, the Snowe Adminsitraton has also been discussing ideas with state and local governments regarding multi-using public spaces for this (such as parking lots or canals with panels.) The discussions were just starting out, but it would be proving to show more support for the renewable energy sector. It would also begin to signal the beginning of the end for one of the competitors within the energy question in the automobile market. And of course, there were other reforms or questions that were being considered, one being a "right to repair" law regarding being able to fix electronics one owned. This question would be started over by the Circuit City & Radio Shack merger.

Internationally, things were still rather quiet, at least when it came to conflicts nations were having with one another. While there would still be violence in various nations, there would still be people trying to resolve it effectively. There would be the arrest warrant over for Omar al-Bashir. The former president of Sudan and wanted on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur, he would be captured by Ethiopian intelligence, giving them more prestige. The big topic would be on global cooperation regarding endeavors in space. This started out from talks between President Snowe and Sovereign Union Chief Director Viktor Tyulkin (who win his reelection) in regards to how to manage and potentially remove space debris around Earth. This would leads to general discussions regarding not just this, but also things like supranational cooperation for astronomical ventures, either for scientific purposes or even economic benefits. After all, the newer environmental regulations and the expectatons of them in the future meant that the procurement of metals needed to be done in other places to limit damage to the Earth. And after all, why not try and mine asteroids? Other international topics of concerns included with the epidemic over of swine flu and dealing with the usual disasters and the like regarding the power of mother nature such as the volcanic eruptions and the usual round of storms.

Pop culture would begin reaching a fascinating shift of sorts here. The big film would be none other than Star Wars Episode IX: Broken Fates. Here, the finale of the sequel trilogy of Star Wars would fully change the status quo. Ben and Sara Skywalker along with Bail Solo and their new allies have reunited with Luke, who discovered the legacy of the Jedi along with the original texts. However, the remnants of the Empire, known as the Imperial Order, continues to chase them before they end up led into a trap and destroyed, with the only survivor being a mysterious Force user known as the Tattered Sage. The film continues to subvert expectations as Han Solo would make a heroic sacrifice to save the new generation. Indeed, a theme of the film is in the passing of the torch and the inevitabilty of change, as seen with the Republic undergoing social upheavel. Ultimately, the Tattered Sage is revealed to be none other than a wizened Jar-Jar. The old Gungan notes that he was why Palpatine rose, but would be sidelined by circumstances, and all was done to bring about chaos to the galaxy, to bring about new things. Jar-Jar maintains his heterodoxical approach by Luke and Leia, the legacy of is old friend. While he lets them escape, Luke and Leia both remain damaged while Mara Jade has to step up in leadership. All the galaxy careens to an uncertain future with new factions to rise. With this, the world of Star Wars has changed as this heralds a new era. Additionally, the decision to kill Han Solo was proposed by Harrison Ford. He originally proposed it in Episode VII, though they were unable to fit it in due trouble fitting in with the plot. While a scene was filmed of it in VIII, Solo actually suggested to IX as to not put pressure on the writers and to give more time for the new characters to come into their own. He became concerned that Solo' death in VIII would take away from the focus on the newbies and given IX's tone, it fit better. When asked if it was the end of his time as Solo, Harrison noted "mostly", hinting that he may or may not come back for smaller bits. The film would be quite a success and left the audience reeling. The status quo was no more and it'd be a time of great change. Many would see this as a chance to expand more with the franchise.

This would not be the only cosmic epic though. James Cameron would unleash a prominent masterpiece over in Earthman. Known as "Project Avatar" in development, the story tells of a group of Na'vi, a race of blue humanoid aliens living on the moon of a gas giant. The story kicks off when they meet a human astronaut, who is struggling to fix his ship to return home and the interactions of a potential future for the Na'vi. Cameron confessed noted the story went through several rewrites before settling on this. He thought it'd be interesting to see humanity through the eyes of an alien and even once joked the film is "like ET, but for grown-ups and if positions were reversed." The film was praised for its world-building and intense visuals with a surprisingly grounded story. It grabbed quite alot of attention, and made some nice money. Beyond Episode IX and Earthman, there were plenty of other films. There was the risque comedy in Hungover, a period peace over with Sherlock Holmes and the surprising release of Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the third of the Narnia films. This has been speculated as to try and keep up with the ages of the actors and a consistent release schedule, especially in how the film series was appealing to tweens and the like. And people were wondering what else could capture this. Additionally, some cult classics rose up due to the spacing. One of them would be Moon with some others being District 9, Push, Knowing, Inglourious Basterds and Final Destination.

Over in animated films, there was still plenty of hit. Disney would release two standouts over this year. The first one would be The Princess & the Frog. A reimagining of the story of the Frog Prince, it is set in the Roaring 20s in New Orleans. It would be considered quite a standout classic of a Disney film with a classic villain, the unique setting, and the traditional Disney film. Another major film would be made by Pixar over in Up, showing the adventure of an elderly man trying to fulfill the wish of his dead wife with a boy scout and dog as a stragglers. The sentimentality of the film and themes of moving on with one's life resonated deeply. Of course, Dreamworks would still have one film out to release over with InterWorld. It shows the story of Joey Harker, who discovers he can go to parallel universes and must team up with various versions of himself to stop two empires of science and magic from trying to cause chaos. It would be this film that would introduce the multiverse and "worldwalking" to the teenage audience. This would not be the only work based on Neil Gaiman's that would see a theatical release. Another would be Coraline, which would become quite a delightful fun of frights. Taking a page out of the Dark Crystal, the film's release would be postponed to October to capitalize the Halloween atmosphere. The film 9 would also prove to be a pretty surprising cult classic of a film, thanks to the newer attitude toward animation. Another hit would be over one released in a film festival made by Madhouse over in Redline. Made by Madhouse, it would get quite a fair bit of attention from the film festival premiered, serving as free advertising for a potential future release. This would be reinforced by the western release of Summer Wars. Piggybacking off the success of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time in terms of studio cred, Summer Wars would keep proving that anime had some staying power over in the western world beyond the enthusiasts and can be enjoyed in it of itself. It also shows the need for growing diversity within it as the interest keeps growing among the young. Lastly, One Piece: Strong World would be the first theatrical release of a film based on one of the Big Three to get a release over in American and European theaters.

As for television, it'd been relatively quiet. When it comes to prominent shows ending, it would be Battlestar Galactica, Everybody Hates Chris and most notably Monk, at least when it came to live action. With animation, it would be more mixed. Shows that were rumored to be cancelled, such as Yin Yang Yo! and My Life As A Teenage Robot would actually get one more season. That said, some shows like Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends would still end up ending and most notably would be Ed, Edd n' Eddy, ending with a TV movie that would see the teenagers finally become accepted by their peers after addressing their personal flaws with some revelations. As for some new shows, there were a few that got some attention. Deadliest Warrior, Cake Boss, Glee, American Ninja Warrior, and most notably, Community, a prominent new show which has been growing quite the large fanbase. Over in animation, there was not much that was new though Nick would create a new show based off the X-Men, here called New Adventures of the X-Men. This show would become prominent for being the first X-Men series that was based on the Neoversal continuity (unlike its predecessor, X-Men Evolution), which was done to introduce it and flesh it out to the general public more. Over with anime though, there were a few growing interests. Over with Disnippon, the big new thing would be K-On! A story of girls coming together for a band, it would become quite a surprising hit and further diversify anime's interest among the general public. A second season would be announced over for the next year. On a more traditional note would be Jewelpet and the next Pretty Cure. Over for Toonami, there was not much new so far. There was the Big Three of Shonen there though Fullmetal Alchemist would be proving itself to be very successful and even exceeding those three. At least one new show would be Soul Eater, showing a world where living weapons partner up with meisters to defend the world from supernatural horrors, such as people who eat souls, monsters or witches. All while learning from a school overseen by Death. Many also speculated the bloc may rotate some of the older shows around or give them a break between arcs so they could air other things.

Over with video games, the Nintendo Wii would keep dominating in sales, especially with how many people such as the elderly were getting into the motion controls. The various Wii exercise games would prove to be quite popular over for them. However, the Nintendo Wii would still prove to have some new games over for gamers to enjoy. The Metroid Prime: Trilogy would get a compliation release with a modified control scheme and a bit of a graphics boost on the Wii. Another would be a new Super Mario Bros game for the Wii. However, the more noteworthy Nintendo games would be released on the GamePal DS. One would be Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, which saw the bros venture inside of Bowser while players also controlled the Koopa King against an old foe. The second would be the long-awaited Pokemon HeartOrange and SoulViolet, a remake of the Gen II games, which would lead to a sort of revitalization of popularity for older fans who may have drifted from the series. Over with Sony, some new exclusives would be Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time and InFamous, a modern homage to the darker antihero stories from the 1980s along with a morality system where the player controls Cole McGrath, a young man with lightning powers. Interestingly enough, the Abox 360 from Microsoft-Atari would have their own counterpart with Alex Mercer from Prototype, who's powers are more like SinEater by Todd McFarlane from Image Comics. Other prominent exclusives included Halo Wars. The Abox 360 and PS3 meanwhile would have a fair number of overlapping games like Borderlands, Bayonetta, Resident Evil 5 and most notably, the metal rock fable with Brutal Legend. However, the biggest hit would be Batman: Arkham Asylum, what many would be considered the epitome of the Batman experience. Over in the PSP, two games stood out a fair bit: LittleBigPlanet and a surprisng remake in Persona 3 Portable, which saw Persona 3 get expanded and adjusted, along with the introduction of a female protagonist in the game. However, beyond the consoles, some new games were coming out to help out. One would be a fascinating new game known as Minecraft, which would be released over for Windows, NexOS, and even UNIX-related operating systems. Here, it was a relaxing game of sorts, serving like a virtual LEGO game. Another one would be Plants vs. Zombies, a popular minigame released on computers, but also notably over on PDAs as well. The ideas of PDAs having games on them was not entirely new, if mainly because very simple games like Tetris would be added to pass time. But this would be something new, especially as PDAs, were growing more complex.

    Culture Reflection: 2007-2009
  • Culture Reflection: 2007-2009

The late 2000s or late Noughties, would have quite a varied number of developments. The election of the first American female president and the introduction of two new states over into the Union would be pretty monumentous occasions. Additionally, with the Internet having grown over into mass public usage, it was something that alot of people were talking about and discussing on social media. Over in international news, the big event would be the new successor state of Saudi Arabia in the new Kingdom of Arabia, now a constitutional monarchy and ruled by the Hashemites. The sigificance of this more well-known to those vested in world events and history, especially given the impact the House of Saud has had. Then again, the 1980s started a decline for them that they weren't able to recover from. This along with the growing discontent with the monarchy, the presence of the Neo-Baathists and so on would lead to the infamous conflict and coup against them. And now, the transitional government has been replaced with the new system, with the hopes that things will remain stable.

    General Trends
Trends didn't change too much over from the mid-2000s for the most part. It seemed more like things would be settling down over for the most part. The growing establishment of a new status quo. Social media would see its widespread adoption here as part of the growing mainstream usage of the Internet. More and more people would be using Myspace or ConnectU for communicating with friends, following media icons on Twitter or each other over on Tumblr or seeing the rise of unique media over on YouTube or Veoh through the review of viral videos or more fascinating content. Though speaking of the two, the two major video websites would begin a divegeance as Veoh would try to escape YouTube's shadow by changing the algorithm that drove their websites, focusing over on watch time over views. While it would be having little effect as of now (mainly because a growing number of people use both sites for posting and viewing their videos), some believe this will dictate differing trends over for the website in terms of which videos become popular on each site. After all, the types of videos that are favored by length in terms of ease of production and or flow will do better on Veoh.

Outside of the Internet, there was the interesting trend as this would be the start of the birth of a new generation. After all, 2006 would mark the last of the Millenials being born. The Millenials signaled a transitioned into a new era, one defined by the upcoming new millenium, the beginning of the post-Cold War era and the growth of various new trends and event. As such, it would be unknown what their successors will be named or called, though some having considered calling them Gen Alpha for the time being. For the oldest Millenials, they were entering adolescence as the youngest entering the social media landscape and becoming familiar with all these new platforms. Beyond this, one pattern would be in cars. While not an even example, Millenials would be among those that the trend for not buying cars would be noticeable. After all, their childhoods would be defined by the return of more traditional urban developments along with the increasing decline of the auto industry. That said, it also varies over by location given the size of towns and the like. That said, thoughts by their predecessors, the Freeborn, speculate the cars of the 1990s would likely be the last real era of classic cars, the last considered collectibles for any future afficionado of cars. Though speaking of automobiles, this would be the last years of the hydrogen vs electric debate. Green hydrogen would be getting enough funding and investment to rise in prominence while batteries would become increasingly advanced and capable of holding the power needed for electric. However, while the winner would not be evident until the early 2010s, the deciding factor emerged here.

Though speaking of renewables and electricity, the late 2000s would see the transitional shift begin with renewable power. The costs of implementing solar and to a lesser extent wind power have lowered enough to reach a level of potential wide-scale practical installation. And at the same time, the technology has advanced far enough fo the gains to be worth it regarding efficiency. As such, many would see this as the infancy of a renewable power boom within the economy. And various governments have begun taking notice of this as well with some planning on how to promote or ease such rising implementations to begin with. To many, they see this as just the rise of the future and that it was truly the future for many. And as such, many predict it will begin picking up speed over the upcoming decade. Of course, this would affect many other businesses as well, such as construction of the parts, the storage of said energy and so on. Additionally, this would raise further questions such as ethical implementation, the questions of acquiring the raw materials and so on to ensure some people are not left behind.

And of course, other trends that began occurring earlier really began picking up here or were becoming notable here. One would be with the fashion industry. The concerns of sustainability really became prominent here. While fashion has always held a prominent place in history and culture, it would be here that the concerns regarding abundance and choice really became an issue. Massive sales of various brands became increasingly common over at this time to try and deal with having too much clothing in stock. Though more specifcially, it was legislation that prevented them from certain tactics to try and regain those losses without actually trying to sell it. Some have tried and would be caught and charged, creating some new standards. Additionally, the illusion of scarcity of clothing would be pretty shattered here as inside peeks into the industry could not be shared on social media and spread like wildfire. With this, the fashion industry would be in turmoil, especially as how some handled it would make it worse. And of course, the corporate troubles behind it would lead to some arrests. That said, the industry was not doomed, but changing as some pundits put it. After all, people still needed to wear clothes and there were still some rules of style and fashion that would be followed and tailored to. That said, it would be the beginning of a rough time for the fashion industry due to having to deal with excessive products, a more aware consumer base and regulations preventing them from just dumping their clothes in landfills or overloading them onto poorer nations.

That said, fashion would just be one field of the growing landscape of internet activism. More and more people were sharing and discussion information on the Internet and in turn, it was becoming the biggest place to share opinions and get people informed. However, it would be the original 'badboys' of the Internet in the hackers that would spark this phenomenon. 'Hacktivism' as it would be called would start out in this time period, with the major examples being the public revelation of the crimes committed by the Church of Scientology, exposed by the group known as Anonymous, and the rise of Wikileaks exposing alot of crooked deals and financial transactions. Their means of acquiring this information and protesting involved the dubious means of hacking, getting the information through questionable means. At the same time, this created a sort of rebellious edge to them which would have them be sensationalized over by those following. And through this usage of controversy, more and more people were looking into using the Internet as a prominent tool for the purposes of change, either through informing and organizing or even just downright disrupting the operations of some of these groups, especially as the world is relying more and more on computers and the internet.

    Films
Films would begin taking a bit of an interesting turn over in the late 2000s. On the one hand, there would be the classic trend of sequels. Some of the biggest films of this time were sequels, either continuing some films or wrapping them up. For example, Star Wars would enter a new era with the conclusion of the prequel and sequel trilogies that started earlier this decade. The conclusion of the prequel trilogy would see the cinematic tragic downfall of Anakin Skywalker over into Darth Vader; having been broken down by war, tragedy and a lack of proper counseling, Anakin would succumb to the dark side and the Republic would fall. The sequel trilogy meanwhile would herald a new age over for Star Wars with the death of Han Solo along with Luke and Leia Skywalker surviving, but being off to the sidelines. This would be to help prepare a new age for the galaxy. This would be in part due to the creative team wanting to tell more stories and build on the lore of the galaxy's future, especially looking into other expanded materials of the past to aid there. Other franchises would end their serieses here, such as the end of the Shrek trilogy for Dreamworks (albeit with the rise of Renard spinoff franchise) or the end of the Atlantis' trilogy, which reinforced hopes Disney was having regarding what they could do regarding animation and action. And of course, there would be the surprise sequels to, such as Indiana Jones and the Frozen City, which would see the return of Wan Li/Shortround, now all grown up and the film wrestling with the potential future of the franchise. Of course, other sequels would still come and show that some trends are continuing. Prince Caspian would show that Narnia would be going with their film series and cementing "YA novels" as a potential source for adaptations though selecting which ones prove to be a rather interesting endeavor, especially since it depends on which ones are standalones or short series and which ones would be longer. Another prominent sequel would be the legendary The Dark Knight as the sequel over to Batman Begins.

In fact, it would seem one of the next big trends would be superhero films. From the success of Spider-Man 2 and Dark Knight along with the surprise over of Iron Man, it was looking that the spandex-clad heroes of comic books would be seeing a revival over on the big budget silver screens. It made sense with their long legacies, the new growing audience of readers thanks to the adaptation of new business models and the advancements over of special effects. Interestingly enough, this would not be the only example over as the idea of people with superpowers while not being superheroes would take on their own niches, such as with Push. Of course, while this was a potentially developing tends, it was not indictive of anything quite yet. After all, there were still plenty of dramatic and more grounded films that would keep on captivating people and the cinemaphiles. This included, but not limited to No Country For Old Men, Zodiac, District 9, Sherlock Holmes, and most groundbreaking over in Earthman, which saw James Cameron create what was the highest grossing movie of all time so far. And this was of course not counting all the various smaller and more independent films that were becoming a bit more popular over time. After all, with how much attention the Internet can give these films and the growing space of video sites like YouTube, there was alot of growing room for possibility.

Another sector would be of course, animation. 2007 marked a prominent year as Jim Henson and Micheal Eisner would depart over from the House of Mouse, signalling yet another major shift in the industry. After all, Henson has been given prominent creative credit for revitalizing Disney starting in the 1980s and beyond. And there was alot to enjoy, even beyond the Muppet films that came out every so often. And even with his and Eisner's departure, animation for Disney would still seem to being well thus far. While Meet The Robinsons was a modest success, Samak the Ayyar would go and reassure audiences on the successful future of the company post-Henson and so would The Princess & the Frog. However, this also came with interesting rumors that Disney may consider focusing more and more on 3D animated CG films for the time being. Some were a bit concerned here, though it did seem like such rumors were only rumors. Some believe this may have been due to concern regarding Pixar and the like. Others note that it could be more of a mix. That said, it did look like hand-drawn animation wasn't out of the picture just yet, There was also the growing experimentations on blending the mediums to try and push both. It was part of the legacy of Henson after all. And DreamWorks was not out of the running. While Shrek may have ended, there were still plenty of work done thanks to various talented individuals, especially Don Bluth. Some promising new franchises were appearing such as Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar and even Interworld. And from what it looked like, they were not done yet trying to go and push Disney. However, Japanimation films would prove to have staying power. Sure there was Ponyo from Studio Ghibli, but there were other big hits in western theaters. Summer Wars would use the popularity of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and the studio that made it to promote itself, getting further interest and doing quite well in the mainstream. Redline would be the surprising trip for its intense heart-pumping action and even One Piece: Strong World's release would be a good sign of all the growth.

    Television
Television would contnue to grow over in this time, especially as some of the more prominent shows would end here, most notably The Sopranos. Beyond the ending getting alot of people to talk about what happened, it was als helping to prove that period pieces were becoming increasingly common and popular, especially when it came to some shows over like crime dramas and the like. The most popular one would be Breaking Even, a thrilling white collar crime drama. However, the show's prominence would also serve as a growing reflection of the changing perceptions within certain fields of employment. While The Office tackled similar issues, albeit comically, Breaking Even did it more seriously. It would begin chipping away at the comfort and security commonly associated over with white collar jobs. Walter White (played by Bryan Cranston) would show the growing struggles regarding age and having to delve into "white collar crime", thanks to his new associate, Jesse Pinkman (played by Aaron Paul) who reflects the struggle of younger workers trying to meet with higher hiring standards without necessarily the right training or equal pay. Another show that focused over on the growing troubles of this was Mad Men. However, there was still plenty of things to look into. From competitions like Cake Boss or American Ninja Warrior to self-aware and witty comedies such as Community, television was seemingly beginning to enter over a wonderful period of growing quality.

Animation would also be going through its ups and downs here. For the grown-ups, it was still primarily focused on older comedies or magical realism. American Alien was going on strong with its satirical view of 1950s America with various shoutouts to musicals and science fiction. At the same time, there was some speculation on the future of the show. Matt Stone and Trey Parker have noted gratitude over for what Seth have done for them, but also wanted to go and do their own work. However, they also noted they didn't have any 'big ideas' for it. After all, the main characters from their 'South Park' failed pilot were rolled over into members of Family Guy. That said, they have noted ideas for projects beyond television, with them saying they were on quite a big idea. As for Futurama, while it was also doing quite well, rumors were going abound that the show may be planning to end soon. Some believed this was due to Matt Groening noting there was not as much for them to explore with the show and its connection to the Noughties. Some have noted it was this train of thought that led to Groening ending The Simpsons back nearly a decade ago (barring the yearly Treehouse of Horror specials). This gave the rumors more strength and some wondered what Groening may do next. That said, there was still some interest over for more serious adult animation as seen with the adaptation of the Dresden Files over on adultswim.

For the younger viewers, television was a mixed bag. That said, there was a growing decline in live action stuff. Some noted this was likely due to th youth showing more interest on the Internet and video gaming, along with just some of the complications with younger actors. That said, they were still around for the most part and perhaps also, some of the older kids had interest over in other shows not necessarily aimed for them. That said, animation remained pretty reliable of interest though TV animation was going through a bit of a transition regarding good ideas and the like. Of course, Disney still had prominence, especially with the success of Phineas and Ferb along with various reruns. Shows like Misadventures of Flapjack and Chowder kept on going while others like Camp Lazlo were ending. These three in particular had a prominent following due to the queer-coded cast, especially the protagonists. It was pretty prominent given how there weren't that many SATMIN+ male characters in media for the youth. The showrunners didn't plan to start it that way, but they leaned into it more and more over time and by their second or third seasons , were pretty transparent (such as Flapjack and Lazlo being multi, Edward dealing with gender identity and so on). That said, it was never part of the main story (barring Chowder having to let down Panini), namely due to the shows' focus on comedy and not really having room for romance to be approached seriously (fans have also joked that it'd be a while before said characters would be ready for a relationship). That said, this was still profoundly impactful over on alot of other shows, especially the more serious ones. The rise of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Ben 10: Alien Force, Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Secret Saturdays would show a growing demand for shows that took themselves and their world-building seriously. The writers also noted the inspiration from their more comical conterparts along with older shows and begin approaching the idea of SATMIN+ romances seriously. One example being from Last Airbender with Suki realizing she's multi from her growing love with Sokka (a surprising reversal on how a difgen or straight person discovers they may be multi).

Of course, anime itself was also growing more over in prominence. Fullmetal Alchemist's anime adaptation was becoming a gamechanger due to how different it was compared to the Big 3 while K-on would revive attention on slice-of-life anime and even becoming popular among guys for how well written it was despite the premise. Some have also noted that channels were undergoing some shifts. MetroToons, who have long been struggling when it came to attention, would start becoming more and more equal to Cartoon Network, Nick, and Disney. While it did have some good original shows, the channel also became a dumping ground of reruns of older shows. It would be getting increased original programming with the various animated series from Star Wars and it wasn't done yet. The various mergers led to DreamWorks now part of MetroCentury and they would continue to try and compete with Disney with various spinoffs of their shows. The first would be The Penguins of Madagascar, with the tetrad of penguins getting their own show on their misadventures over in the New York Zoo. There were also announcements that spinoffs of Kung Fu Panda and Interworld in the works and that was just scratching the surface from what was heard.

    Video Games
The end of the Noughts would mark the beginning of the seventh generation of video game consoles. While Sony's Playstation 3 and Microsoft-Atari's Abox 360 were both powerful consoles, they would both be blown out of the water by the Nintendo Wii. The Nintendo Wii would go and start fulfilling the promise over of motion controls for years now. It would be this that would help it garner massive sales as it also could be enjoyed by people of all ranges and spectrums, along with having fun. Games like Wii Sports and Wii Play would see people like parents or even the elderly, with some of these consoles being used for recreational purposes in retirement homes or as an easier memes for people with limited movement to enjoy themselves. The console found a new audience for those that didn't have much interest in games while the additional development time meant it had enough juice to play games of similar quality over to its competitors. It was pretty telling that both the PS3 and ABox 360 would begin developing plans for their own motion control like schemes though with their own added flair and suggestions. Additionally, with how the Internet has become widely used and popular in the mainstream with the rise of social media, connectivity with the Internet has become a key feature with all of these major consoles and with that, playing online. There was a growing display of being able to play with anyone online, without them necessarily having to be in the same room. Additionally, this provided the opportunity to meet up with new people and play wth them. This growing networking would add yet a new layer of socializing and further normalizing video games as a mainstream hobby.

As for the games themselves, it was still a usual display of wonders. Nintendo kept on growing their major franchises with Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Wii, Pokemon Stadium Wii among many others, including a revamped rerelease of the Metroid Prime trilogy. Atari would also be doing well as a division of Microsoft, being able to begin focusing more and more on their original IPs and making them standout. Crystal Castles with Bently Bear would see a turn to action roleplaying, navigating though complex environments and peoples, combining a mix of puzzle solving and action. Some even said it was a family friendly alternative to the newer Fallout games. Swordquest would be a more traditional approach over. While initially taking inspiration from Zelda, it would also be looking to other RPs like Elder Scrolls Oblivion, but with its own lore and tone. A charming tone that was still serious. Playstation 3 kept up on going over with its successes, even if the sales were not as promising as expected. Handheld games continued to be a popular thing with the GamePal DS and the Playstation Portable competing fiercely in that niche. The former had price and game selection on their side, but the latter had raw power and graphics letting it do more. MMORPGs were growing bigger and bigger in popularity and influence, such as World of Warcraft. However, the biggest development would be the release of game over on PDAs. PDAs were becoming more and more advanced in their capabilities and there was a phenomenon of seeing them now over in not just businessfolk, but also some of the adolescents. This trend really began picking up when NeXTech released their Nexton. A successor over to the old Apple Newtons, the Nexton had all the classic features of a PDA, but also the features from their NexPleis regarding music and videos. Camera functions were also being considered added and there was of course, the touch screen. As such, they were becoming quite popular, especially among the youth and Microsoft wouldn't be too far behind, working with their old contacts to do something similar. A few games were present over on the classic flip phones, but they were simple ones, like Tetris. Lastly, there would be the growing of 'indie' games; the video games made by small indepenedent groups or even individuals, showing a new generation of growing developers.

    Music
For music, one of the big changes would be none other than the rise of YouTube and Veoh. Songs would be uploaded in video format, either combined with still images, video from differing sources or even just the lyrics of the song. For many enthusiasts of the Internet, it was becoming a place to go and find new music or for those who knew how, try and download all sorts of songs for free. However, it would also expose more people to new types of music and serve as an even greater communal ground. Moreover, it would also reveal what people desired with music. Some of the most popular of these videos would be soundtracks to video games or anime. It was showing a demand that few parties have seemed to tap into and furthermore, it was also showing off some interesting new talent. After all, YouTube and Veoh's increasing popular among the mainstream populace meant a bigger audience and more opportunity. And some people were noticing this faster than others. One prominent group that would be working to take advantage of this was ArtistShare. Having helped pioneered the idea of crowd-funding for creatives and having helped bail out Napster, it would be unsurprising that they would show interest over in YouTube and Veoh. After all, how much undiscovered talent laid there? Furthermore, it would provide ample opportunity to grow their model and way of doing business, without having to bend the knee over to the deals of the major record companies.

Beyond this, it seemed that the trends of musical tastes continued. Hip hop and rap had some prominence left though still undergoing its soul searching on subject matters (though a couple of songs have explored the idea of "white collar rage"). Rock and pop remained popular as always though there was a growing trend toward certain bands and styles. Overall, it was seeming like it was a matter of who would be popular and for what reasons. Some of the popular songs include: "Irreplaceable" by Beyoncé, "Hey There Delilah," by the Plain White T's, "How to Save a Life" by The Fray, "Home" by Daughtry, "Bleeding Love" by Leona Lewis and so on. Daughtry was among the new big names rising in popularity, alongside Katy Perry and Taylor Swift, though this was also with the growing flux because of the crowd-funding model. While having been around for a bit of a while, more and more big names were getting interested and recommending it over to the new talent. After all, if the new stars would become famous through this model, this could help bring out alot of change over for how things are done over in the music industry.

    Other
By the oncoming end of the Noughts, the comic book industry was nearing a new status quo. The "comics compendium magazine" model that Disney used for their works (themselves inspired by Shonen Jump) was becoming more and more dominant. After all, through this model, people could be introduced to a compendium of different titles and works and then the big companies can use the successful sales of compliations to see what the audience was wanting. Furthermore, it forced the industry to evolve past the comic book shop model and in turn, be rewarded with a seemingly rejuvenated financial windfall. Of course, by now as they were settling in, they were beginning to deal with more unique problems. DC and Marvel's vast and varied collection presented a unique challenge for their magazines. After all, they had quite alot of them being released fo all the various heroes, teams and so on. Their current solution so far was to release multiple magazines, categorizing them into various broad genres that the various magazines could cover. Of course, this was easier said than done on how to do so, with the companies going on various approaches. DC for example would use the more famous heroes as headliners and group them up based on genre. One magazine for example had Batman as a prominent focus alongside other "normal" heroes such as Green Arrow or the Outsiders, Wonder Woman would lead focusing on some of the fantastic and so on. Marvel meanwhile would also be doing something similar in that regard. The magazines something included comics not part of the verse, such as the Neoversal's X-Men alongside the another. Disney meanwhile was able to keep things more organized from the getgo. Image was the underdog here, but their creator-focused format also gave them a unique advantage along with cooperation with the other smaller comics groups.

Of course, beyond the distibution models, there were the stories themselves. DC and to a lesser extent Marvel were starting to stagnate a little in their stories as of late. While not terrible or even mediocre, some have noted a sense of "directionlessness" in some of the arcs. While the character writing and growth had improved, especially as editorial became more flexible, there was a looming sense of "what do we do now?" over in these stories. At the same time, this did lead to a lot of focus on some of the more obscure characters or those without as prominence. Indeed, older ideas were brought back and new directions taken (like Green Arrow's renewed focus on Native American history or Renee Montoya becoming the second Question). Graphic novels kept on growing here, seeing a notable boom. Besides adaptations of classical stories (and even a few modern ones) into graphic novels, newer stories were coming out, especially by younger writers who indulged in the format to tell the stories they wished to read when they were young. There was also the growing trend of drawing more and more from real life. From Aya of Yop City's stories of growing up in Côte d'Ivoire, to A.D.: New Orleans After the Deluge, which told the stories of those who survived Hurricane Katrina along with stories of the brave individuals aiding in cleaning up and rebuilding, there was a fascinating appeal in combning real life stories with the format. For many, it was more appealing than just the words alone as the pictures could often say and present more than by themselves. It also would see a bit of a growing trend in magical realism within these works along with inspiration of what people wanted. Moreover, this was being recognized enough to where ads for grapical novels, along with comics and even some novels themselves, were being advertised across different mediums. Veoh, having been purchased by Akashica founder Jeff Bezos, would in particular note some of these works.

Over for the Internet, it would be the late 2000s that really saw the surge of users across many websites grow. It was also viewed as something of the twilight of an era of sorts. Sprite comics were undergoing a decline in popularity while the affiliated forums with them were shrinking or consolidating in some form. Larger groups and so on would begin migrating to the various social media platforms though these older sites were remaining relevant for many of their users, least for the time being. Memes were growing in popularity, symbolizing the strange, frustrating yet wonderful beauty over of living and existence. ConnectU and Myspace became juggernauts in the new cyber landscape while newer sites were born like Twitter and Tumblr that provided niche opportunities and holds for the people. Watching videos in the Internet became more and more a hobby and people began making them. Veoh and YouTube were becoming household names, especially as the two services began slowly differenting themselves, mainly in Veoh's change to favor "watch time" over Youtube's style of "number of views" in terms of the website's algorithms of what videos would be popular around the time though there were still growing subcommunities and more often than not, most of the growing content creators uploaded their videos to both websites. Additionally, said sites were influenced by other major websites: social media became the main way for these videos to spread and grow while ArtistShare would make news for discussions over with more websites regarding potential plans of cooperation. After all, they had proven crowdfunding could be possible for growing music artists, so what would happen if other independent creators could do it...?

Overall, the end of the Naughts was seeing a fascinating transition of sorts. With these growing websites becoming big enough to see usage fo many people, it seemed like only a matter of time before they played a role in the offline parts of life. Additionally, the election of Olympia Snowe was considered part of a phenomenon going on at this point in which women were becoming more prominent in positions of power and influence. At the same time, this came about with a rising wave of criticism toward male-dominated culture, or at least the very unpleasant aspects of this. The major defining instance of this was the 2008 arrest of Jeffrey Epstein , a prominent financeer who would become infamous with the revelation of a number of sexual assaults, especially with the aid of his accomplice, the British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell. Both would get life in prison and the revelations of what happened would lead to growing call on how to better handle and prevent these sort of actions. At the same time, this would be coming in with the rise of "hacktivism" or using computer hacking and similar tricks for activist purposes. Anonymous' war against Scientology and the rise of Wikileaks occurring in the same year as the rest also signaled this growing interest. It was a reflection of how much the online world was reflective of offline, the usage of computers and the further need to rebel against unjust circumstances yet also with the confident of people doing the right thing. After all, the various officials involved with Epstein's arrests went above and beyond to ensure he could not slither away from charges. Life went on however though here, the seeds of change were also seen. More and more it was becoming clear that people's enjoyment were in experiences and services rather than just physical objects. Going out to do something fun was already the popular thing, but now it was starting to gain a new level of significance thanks to the influence of social media, exposing media to all sorts of revelations, ideas and activities that they could go and do.

    Political Retrospection: 2005 - 2009 Part 1
  • Political Retrospection: 2005 - 2009 Part 1

    The Anglosphere
Over in the United States, the latter half of the first decade of new millenium proved that change kept on coming. Specifically, many of the smaller events and changes in the past began growing over and leading to a new status quo. The major example of this would be the election of Olympia Snowe as the first female President of the United States and the first president of the modern Federalist Party, the successor to the Republican Party. Snowe's election proved that the Federalist Party was indeed here to stay and that they were the new face of American conservatism over for the 21st century. At the same time though, President Clinton's second term would still have prominent hallmarks to show for it. One major event would be the summer of 2006 where same-sex marriage was legalized throughout all of the United States through the "Equal Marriage and Rites Act". This was done thanks to years of hard work and dedication from many support groups and civilians who pushed for this, along with the growing support over in the mainstream, especially thanks to the mass media over the last two decades helping to further normalize the idea of same-sex couples for those who may not have seen or interacted wth them. This is in turn inspired more people to come out of the closet and support one another. Of course, with the United States now having openly supported same-sex marriage, there would no doubt be quite a massive shockwave over across the world. Beyond this, some other big news would be the induction of Washington DC (Douglass Commonwealth) and Puerto Rico over into the union as formal states. This meant the US would now have 52 new states, bringing in 4 new Senators, a handful of new House Reps along with governors and a bit of the shifting of the political stucture of the nation. There was also some discussion on increasing the number of distict courts and rearranging some, though this was not considered in the Clinton Administration outside of some planning.

Canada wouldn't be as affected by this; after all, they would go and approve of same-sex marriage the year before the Americans would, something they couldn't help but go and brag about. At the same time, it was still very welcomed news and it would definitely put pressure over on everyone else. Meanwhile, Canadian politics were in a bit of flux as it would be a toss-up over who would win in the next election. The Progressive Conservatives had been making some strong showings with their recovering, but have yet to find a suitable leader to help them further into victory. The Liberals meanwhile had to deal with the retirement over of Paul Martin from politics though the good news was that they were able to reclaim victory and transition into a new Prime Minister in Stéphane Dion, who took the place of Martin in leading the Liberals. As for the NDP, they were beginning to recovery extensively under Jack Layton, to where many were predicting a return of NDP leadership in the next upcoming years. For the most part, things in Canada were rather calm, though there were still various issues to deal with, such as maintaining growth in the economy, trying to go and maintain the presence of specialists, and of course, the First Nations people still fighting to get better conditions and rights, especially with alot of the complicated aspects that some of the politicians really don't wanna address or look into.

And of course, with what the US and Canada did, there was now growing pressure on the rest of the Anglosphere to go and follow suit. Australia would see support of same-sex marriage go and spike extensively thanks to these two victories and they were also motivated over by a desire to go and beat the British to the punch. This would be seen in growing support over for the Labor Party who was pushing on these. So much so that the Labor Party would go over and win in 2007 on this promise, allowing them to go and push for it in 2008. Additionally, other issues were motivating parties to go all hands in with other issues. With solar power looking more and more viable, the Australian Greens would strengthen their hold on the coalition with the National Party and Country Liberal Party. After all, combining green policies with economic incentives would allow them to get plenty of public support and economic prosperity. New Zealand would also go all in over at the same time as Australia would over with same-sex marriage and thus really begin putting pressure over on the United Kingdom as well as Ireland in that regard, And the growing successes were invigorating the movements over in these nations and in others. Charles Kennedy would go and get his Lib-Dems reelected, managing to get more votes. While Labour was still part of their coalition, they were beginning to lose members and voters who saw more of a future with the Lib-Dems. Kenneth Clarke meanwhile continued to reinforce his position over in the Tories, with Euro-skepticism even more of a minority position within the Tories.

    Latin America
Latin America would begin seeing further fascinating reforms over the latter half of the decade. Mexico would see Porfirio Muñoz Ledo continue on before ending over in 2006. The Ledo Administration followed up on what the Cárdenas Administration did and in the last couple of years, doubled down on working with Mondragon. Additionally, the Ledo Administration would go with an ambitious project with the creation of Solmex. A state-owned and managed company, they focus on reseaching, manufacturing and installing various solar energy products such as solar cells and photovoltaic systems along with acting as a national energy company. It was inspired by Pemex and indeed, meant to be its successor due to the decline in petroleum on the globlal market over the past few decades. However, the growing test of Solmex would go and be overseen by Ledo's successor in Andrés Manuel López Obrador. AMLO's victoy was still a surprise, but it was reflective of both the PRD's past successes and that they would remain a prominent influence for the time to come. AMLO would ride in a further promise of progressive social reform and maintaining aid and development of the working class, especially with the creation of Solmex. Meanwhile, the country would also continue on dealing with various forms of corrupton along with other issues.

Central America was also starting to pick up steam thanks to the aid of Mexico, the Mondragon Corpoation and most of all, the efforts of their own people. The drug cartels had become a minor problem here and the focus lay over on getting the governing groups to go and work together. While there were plenty of optimists and promise, they were sometimes stymied over by lingering corruption, the troublesome details of ruling day by day and of course, the in-fighting. That said, things were still somewhat stable and more and more people were doing their best to make the most of it. At the same time, things were looking better and better with both the American and Mexican governments keeping out for any potential violent problems. Meanwhile over in the Caribbean, Haiti and the Dominican Republic have made great strides and improved significantly since then. There was also growing efforts for the two nations to work together, with modest grounds being made. However, the various divides continue to linger over in the nation. It didn't help the language barrier, though Haiti would begin benefitting from closer ties to Canada, thanks to their shared French influences. Cuba meanwhile remained in its peaceful if complicated state. They and the Americans hadn't been enemies for a while, but it would be a stretch to call them friends. That said, they were no longer in embargo, so there was that at the least. Cuba also continued with the Sovereign Union

Over in South America, the improvements were more noticeable. The crackdowns against the drug cartels helped bring peace to the area and with the growing successes of creating worker co-ops, they were also becoming popular in parts of South America. Starting over in Columbia, it would begin trickling down throughout the rest of th continent, starting with Venezuela. The nations of the continent have been growing more and more thanks to the start of their own tech boom. While it was caused by some generous and competitive work put by Sun Microsystems and NeXTech, the new generation of engineers, programmers and thinkers would begin working on their own line od products and the hopes would be for them to try and match up. Brazil was especially this as Sun Microsystems became quite prominent there and the country continued to keep on growing economically while also dealing with its political problems. It was not easy work, but they were getting there more and more. Of course, all of this was n the backdrop of all sorts of new political movements starting come out. Environmentalism was becoming more and more prominent and while no one was against the growing prosperity, there were growing concerns about getting there and where most of the money was going. Additionally, other issues were becoming more prominent, especially among the younger generation. Calls for reparations and better work for the Chile would finally begin implementing a smaller scale version of "Cybersyn 2.0", having been implemented to help deal with basic necessities and a state of emergancy. However, it was a far cry from the original ideal. Some believe this was done out of a caution for testing while others propose it was more due to the uneven distribution. Overall, things were pretty stable there.

    Political Retrospection: 2005 - 2009 Part 2
  • Political Retrospection: 2005 - 2009 Part 2

    Western Europe
Over in the western part of Europe, things were somewhat quiet though recent developments were causing a stir. The successful legalization of same-sex marriage over in Canada, the United States and even Australia and New Zealand caused a massive surge of energy and support for similar movements over in Europe. And the various other nations in the area were beginning to go and feel the pressure a bit. And of course, there were plenty of other focus points that would become prominent in the election cycles and governance over in Europe. Over in France, a sign of the times would be seen with the two finalist candidates, as both of them would've been considered Baby Boomers by American standards. Born post-World War II and raised under the Fifth Republic, they would be the first to not be raised under de Gaulle's politics. And victory would go over to the dark horse candidate in François Bayrou, candidate of the Union for French Democracy. The party benefitted from people growing more toward it, especially with the RFR party undergoing changes with Chirac's retirement from politics. That said, alot of questions remained, especially with Haiti. Meanwhile, over in Germany, Angela Merkel would manage to become chancellor as head of the CDU/CSU coalition along with exploiting the collapse of the SPD/FDP coalition. Howeber, the rising success of the PDS has also gotten some attention. Overall, Germany has been doing rather well along with working on further economic stimulus and trying to focus on renewables though also lagging a bit behind when it comes over to nuclear power. However, they have still be doing quite all right.

Over in the Netherlands, the Labour Party would manage to retain power though it also came with Socialist Party having risen substantially in power to become a major party. While they would go and enter a coalition with the Labour Party, it remains to be seen how well it will handle. At the same time, the nation had been making waves over in Europe. After all, being one of the first to legalize same-sex marriage along wth dealing with issues of legality of certain drugs though they did follow in Portugal's footsteps in terms of decriminalization of it to deal with it along with looking into its medical purposes. One wonders what awaits in the next election. Meanwhle, speaking of Portugal, the success of their drug program along with issues with the other parties would also the Portugal Socialist Party to bounce back over into greater prominence, with the focus being on maintaining economic stability. They also maintained the course of further infrastucture building such as with high-speed rails. Spain would see similar results with their Socialists also managing to score a win, albeit more modestly here. Over in Italy, the center-right House of Freedoms manage to go and get a modest victory, but it seemed to have been a calm before a storm as the Italian political background kept changing as the Union of the Centre would exceed expectations in terms of growth. Over in Belgium, a surprising new coaliton would form between the Christian People's Party and the Reformist Movement to end up with a centralist form of government over in 2007. Just a couple years earlier, they also legalized adoptation by same-sex partners.

    Central Europe
CETO continuted to stabilize itself and its growth. Albania and Croatia would be the next nations to go over and join CETO, nearly completing the inclusion of the nation. It's believed that Bosnia would be fully eligible to join in a year or so. Meanwhile, the region's political sphere continued to be influenced by the new social democrat global order along with the beginnings of their youth entering politics. Specifcially, the connection to social media and growing up in such a state meant growing shifts were beginning to appear regarding questions such as same-sex marriage and the rise of social media there. Over in Poland, the Civil Platform, a center-right party, would end up going over and taking power away from the leftists which seemed to be reflecting a new status quo over for the Poles, especially with them winning reelection over Donald Tusk. Right now, they were focusing on enjoying their benefits and slowing down on certain developments. Switching to Hungary, the fall of Viktor Orbán would send political shockwaves as the Fidesz – Hungarian Civic Alliance would crack from leadership squabbles. Orbán would meanwhile spend several years in prison for the various finanical chicanery. The Hungarian Democratic Forum would surge in popularity as a result of this. However, they still wouldn't have enough votes so they would create a coalition with the Alliance of Free Democrats- Hungarian Liberal Party.

Over in the Czech Republic, the Czech Social Democratic Party would manage to go and hold onto their power in the election of this year. However, some were wonderng how long this would last with the rumors of some new political parties rising up. For now though, the Czechs remained rather quiet and stable. Over in Slovakia, the ruling party in the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union – Democratic Party maintained their grip though the rise of the Direction – Social Democracy Party led many to believe it would likely win the next upcoming election. Back in Austria, Wolfgang Schüssel would remain Prime Minister, though the coalition of Austrian People's Party and Liberal Forum would end up fraying and he would align his party with the controversial Freedom Party of Austria. However, with the corruption charges growing at the officials, many were noted the Liberal Forum and the Social Democratic Party would see major gains in the next elections and shift the balance of party. The Nordic nations remained pretty unchanged so far though rumors were circulating in regards if any of the nations would join NATO or CETO. They also had their own issues such as the Danes' treatment of Greenland or how the Sámi are treated. Meanwhile, Montenegro would finally leave Serbia, ending the remnants of Yugoslava. Serbia continues to be ruled by the Democratic Party while the other major party, the far-right Serbian Radical Party would begin seeing massive declines as a result of various losses and other issues.

    Eastern Europe
The Sovereign Union has become a topic of great fascination as of late. Having more or less finished with modernizing, they have been undergoing a cultural boom as of late. Many have noted that said boom was partially inspired by many young people's interactons with Western media in the 1990s and have branched off since into inspiration. At the same time, more original works have been made. Politically, things are going slowly but surely. With a growing new crop of politicians, the hope is on changing the various parties and political structures. However, things have been well under Chief Director Viktor Tyulkin, who would see reelection once more. On the local level, newer political parties were rising, especially over in the urban areas. Additionally, Russia along with Central Asia have started coming in term with their past and moving forward. But perhaps most notably of all is a secret government project that the Sovereign Union has been working on. A project that has been worked on for years and would likely be announced over in the oncoming years or so. Few people wonder what it was or the potential scale of it. What is know was that it took a fair bit of political power to push it through along with it being somewhat divisive, namely from a generational gap along with just coming from the delays and setbacks for a number of reasons. However, this project they claim will be quite a game changer.

Across Eastern Europe, the big thing would be over with Romania and Bulgaria going over to join the European Union, having been able to finally rise from the troubles of the past in order to do so. So far over in both Bulgaria and Romania, it was basically seeing the reformed socialists in power before they would be voted out in lieu of Christian democracy advocates along with more economically liberal folk. At the same time, they were still influenced by the social democratic global influence and many were noting that the socialists, least those who idenitify as such and may be more social democratic, have a chance to get back into power thanks to fresh faces along wth the growing frustrations at some of the corrruption along with the lackluster speed of implementation certain reform. Ukraine on the meanwhile would see the social democrats once more into prominence as they have become quite the attractive nation thanks to their neon supplies. As such, the ruling coalition of the Socialist Party of Ukraine and Peasant Paty of Ukraine organized to treat their vast resources of neon much like how Norway approaches their oil, with the hopes of implementing the money gained back into them. They would also institute close ties over with Armenia and Kartvelia. While the three were aleady part of the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation, they wanted to grow closer also and focus ties over through connecton of the Black Sea along with expand in terms of economic opportunities. Indeed, this has helped gain tec interest in Armenia and Kartvelia as a result. Additionally, non-European neighbors have also drawn in, notably Iran. Turkey meanwhile continued to focus on combatting the last of its political corruption while trying to play catch-up in a world that keeps changing.
