What would a Modern HRE Look Like?

Supposing that, by some manner or other, the HRE managed to survive to present day, what would it look like politically, culturally, and economically?

Would they still maintain their Post, which was a heritable principality of its own, lead by th Thurn & Taxis family and had its own army, the Salva Guardia ? Seems a little bit outdated.

It depends totally about POD. It might be anything from loose federation to centralised empire. It could be parliamentary monarchy or absolute monarchy. And perhaps it has colonies or then not.

And this should be on Before 1900 Forum.

The EU makes the HRE look like a paragon of organisation and efficiency!

Well, the EU is mainly united in terms of economic and fiscal deregulation and open borders between member states and those who are members of the Schengen treaty. There is no political and social Union. There is also no constitution and no united foreign policy.

There is a sort of political union, although it is working, well, messily. And there is something approaching a constitution, indeed (the Treaty of Lisbon). In terms of social, there are programs like Erasmus, that tend to create an embryonic European society. European Union does not work very well overall, and it's been having some very major blunders of late (say, for example, Greece), but it is much more than just economic and fiscal deregulation (although this is indeed one of the most prominent elements as of now).

Could a surviving German Empire POST WW1 merges with Austria-Hungary?

Or Austria somehow kicks total butt and bails out the Germans and forces an Anschluss with themselves on top?

If it were to be a 'Holy Roman Empire', it would by definition have to be ruled, at least symbolically, by an emperor or empress. So I don't know how a modern HRE looks like, but J have some idea on how its coins will.

I don't see that happening. Them might form something EU style union but not anything more. And Austro-Hungary would collapse after WW1 anyway. Austria might later join to Germany but it wouldn't be Holy Roman Empire.
