Embargo vs. the Berlin Wall

I got the idea from a book by Wolfgang Leonhard (Meine DDR).
He wrote that the right reaction to the building of the Berlin Wall would have been a Western Embargo on the GDR or even the entire Eastern bloc within 24 hours.
´He claims that the DGRs economy depended so havily on trade with the west, that Ulbricht would have had to open the border again.

What do you think?
Would that really have happened, and what would that mean for the cold war?
